Overview
Sunlit Solitude is a lighting and visual effects practice project focused on exploring cinematic lighting in a 3D environment, the practical use of Maya nParticles, and the creation of a more realistic rendered animation. With this piece, I wanted to study how lighting, atmosphere, and subtle particle simulation could work together to create a quiet but visually rich interior shot.
To begin, I downloaded a set of 3D assets from online sources and refined their materials in Substance Painter and Photoshop before bringing them into Maya. This allowed me to better control the surface quality and visual cohesion of the environment before moving into lighting and animation.
After the assets were prepared, I created a slow push-in camera animation to guide the viewer through the space and establish a more cinematic sense of framing. I then lit the scene using a three-point lighting setup, supplemented with environmental lighting and rim light to shape the objects and enhance the atmosphere of the shot.
To create a stronger sense of realism and passing time, I also keyframed the light outside the left window across the timeline, allowing the light intensity and direction to shift gradually and produce a long-exposure or time-lapse-like lighting effect within the room. This helped make the scene feel more dynamic while still maintaining its quiet and solitary mood.
Finally, I used Maya nParticles to create dust particles and simulate them drifting through the interior space as if carried by a soft wind. These subtle particle movements added another layer of realism and helped reinforce the feeling of sunlight, air, and stillness within the environment.
